Welcome to the Department of pharmacology of the Université de Montréal Faculty of Medicine

The Department of pharmacology

Pharmacology as a science, aims to discover new therapeutic agents to improve human health. One of its goals is also to understand how therapeutic agents act on the various systems in the body. The Department of pharmacology of the Université de Montreal Faculty of Medicine was established in 1959. More than 50 years later, the Department now includes close to 30 regular faculty members and 30 associate members that contribute to the teaching of pharmacology and that perform research in the various sub-disciplines of pharmacology including cardiovascular pharmacology, neuropharmacology, cancer and cellular therapy, immunopharmacology and inflammation, drug metabolism and clinical pharmacology, pharmacogenomics and the pharmacology of natural health products. The chair of the department is presently Dr. Patrick Du Souich, M.D., Ph.D.

Graduate studies in pharmacology at the Université de Montréal

The department is home to a vigorous graduate program in pharmacology including a M.Sc. (masters in pharmacology) and a Ph.D. (doctorate in pharmacology) program. Specializations in neuropharmacology, clinical pharmacology, integrative cardiovascular pharmacology and molecular pharmacology can be selected at admission. A pharmacogenomics program has also been created in 2010. Prospective students should be aware that although masters and doctorate theses can be written in English, lectures at the Université de Montreal are given in French. A minimal working knowledge of French is therefore recommended before initiating a graduate program at our department.

  • Prior to initiating a graduate program, it is necessary that students identify a prospective supervisor amongst the Department faculty members.
  • General information regarding admission at the Université de Montreal can be found on the following Web site.
  • More detailed information on our graduate programs can be found at the following address (in French).

Postdoctoral fellowships in pharmacology at the Université de Montréal

The Department of pharmacology Faculty members host postdoctoral fellows from around the world in their world class laboratories located both on the main campus of the Université de Montreal as well as in a number of University Hospital research centers. Prospective postdoctoral fellows should contact a Faculty member of their choice to inquire into the possibilities. Faculty members with the English sign have an English version of their page.

Weekly seminars in pharmacology

The Department of pharmacology organizes weekly seminars in pharmacology on Thursday mornings at 9AM from September to May, every year. Seminars are given in either French or English, depending on the speaker. The updated list of seminars can be found at the following address (in French).

For information on our seminar series, please contact: Sylvie Parenteau.

Student activities

Information concerning student activities, including our annual pharmacology research day can be found at the following address (in French).

Recruitment of new faculty members at the Department of pharmacology

The Department of pharmacology occasionally recruits new faculty members. Only individuals with a strong track record and a significant number of publications in international peer-reviewed journals can be considered. We periodically revise our recruitment priorities. Currently, we are particularly interested to develop our expertise in clinical pharmacology, pharmacogenomics, pharmacology of natural health products, cell therapy and use of stem cells and immunopharmacology and inflammation. As of 2010, our number one priority is to recruit an individual in the field of clinical pharmacology. Interested candidates should contact the chair of the recruitment committee at: louis-eric.trudeau@umontreal.ca
